In 2025, the Kunstmuseum Bern is showing three large monographic exhibitions. The first half of the year is devoted to two pioneers of their time: Marisa Merz, whose work is distinguished by its subtle power, was one of the leading figures of the post-war Italian art scene. Carol Rama is one of the outstanding women artists of the modern period, who only achieved fame late in life. Her works, marked by elemental human experiences, still have an impact today. In the autumn, the Kunstmuseum Bern is showing a large exhibition on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in which the artist is presented for the first time as a curator of his own work.

A Friendship between Paris and Bern at the Kunstmuseum Bern features major works by the founders of Cubism, while at the same time shedding light on the extraordinary friendship between the Parisian gallery owner Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler and the Bern businessman and collector Hermann Rupf.

Between 20 September 2024 and 2 February 2025, the Kunstmuseum Bern is showing the artist’s first major institutional solo exhibition in Europe. Sillman’s powerful and allusive artistic language refers time and again to the history of painting. In her presentation in Bern, she is involving works from the collection of the Kunstmuseum Bern.

+41 31 328 09 93The team Schmidlin Architekten (Zurich and Engadine) wins the international competition for the renovation and expansion of Kunstmuseum Bern. The winning project «Eiger» envisages a distinctive new building with a timeless look and museum square. President of the jury Thomas Hasler praises the “modern, self-assured architectural language” of the free-standing new building, which fits in well with the UNESCO World Heritage site, and the “clear added value” for the city. An impressive complex of buildings will be created around a museum square that opens up onto Hodlerstrasse and the slope of the Aare. The Kunstmuseum will become a lively place connected to the public space where people can congregate and communicate.

Lang/Baumann, bestehend aus Sabina Lang (*1972 in Bern, Schweiz) und Daniel Baumann (*1967 in San Francisco, USA) erhalten den Paul Boesch Kunstpreis 2024, der das Schaffen eines Schweizer Künstlers oder einer Schweizer Künstlerin im Bereich Bildender Kunst auszeichnet. Die Auszeichnung ist mit insgesamt 50‘000 Franken dotiert. Die Verleihung findet am Mittwoch, 28. August 2024, um 18 Uhr im Kunstmuseum Bern statt.

His expressive and vividly coloured paintings address the existential dimension of life and are at the same time a pure artistic experiments.

+41 31 328 09 93Between 22 March and 21 July 2024, the Kunstmuseum Bern is putting a unique focus on Albert Anker in the context of its collection. At the centre of Albert Anker. Reading Girls are Anker’s efforts in favour of the education of girls. Not only did he advocate for children’s right to an education as a politician, but as a painter often represented girls and young women reading and writing.

The South African artist has been a radical voice in international art since the mid-1990s. Her works are centred on the power of performance and the body as a place of resistance, healing and discourse.
