+41 31 328 09 93The team Schmidlin Architekten (Zurich and Engadine) wins the international competition for the renovation and expansion of Kunstmuseum Bern. The winning project «Eiger» envisages a distinctive new building with a timeless look and museum square. President of the jury Thomas Hasler praises the “modern, self-assured architectural language” of the free-standing new building, which fits in well with the UNESCO World Heritage site, and the “clear added value” for the city. An impressive complex of buildings will be created around a museum square that opens up onto Hodlerstrasse and the slope of the Aare. The Kunstmuseum will become a lively place connected to the public space where people can congregate and communicate.

In December 2022, the competition jury selected 39 offices for the first stage of the architectural competition from all the prequalification applications. The teams are now preparing designs, from which the jury will select approx. 10 teams for further processing in the second stage of the competition at the end of June 2023. All stages of the project competition are conducted anonymously.
In order to make the principles and requirements of the architectural competition transparent and comprehensible, the Kunstmuseum Bern publishes the competition programme. This is the basis on which the competition projects are subsequently selected by the jury.

The architectural competition for the museum renovation project and new building is now starting. The jury unites international expertise and regional sensitivity. To facilitate the renovation of the Kunstmuseum, the Communal Parliament of the City of Bern has decided to transfer building rights for the building at Hodlerstrasse 6 to the Foundation of the Kunstmuseum Bern at no cost. The property plays a pivotal role in the museum renovation project.
